Business Communication Competency Testing

An English-proficient workforce is critical to success for global businesses, yet many companies face a significant challenge in accurately and cost-effectively assessing the business English communication skills of employees and prospective employees.

The GAC Corporate Academy is now offering operating companies an opportunity to evaluate the communication competencies of their employees. This is done through an online testing tool called BELIT (Beginner’s English Level Indicator Test).

Business English Level Indicator Test™ or BELIT (pronounced be-lit) is an effective tool that enables companies to evaluate English skills for screening and ongoing career development.

Different versions of the same test
To address the wide range of customer needs, GlobalEnglish provides two versions of the test.

  • For comprehensive evaluation, the 50-minute BELITPlus assesses learners' competence in English across four key skill areas: speaking; grammar; listening; and reading.
  • For accurate, timely evaluation, the 30-minute BELIT evaluates learners' communication skills by testing their ability to understand written and spoken English.

The adaptive test format means that students receive questions that are specifically targeted to their level, resulting in a more efficient and accurate placement. The interactive design includes a variety of question types, ensuring an engaging testing experience for learners.

Test scores for both tests correlate to the instructional levels in the GlobalEnglish Edge™.

Test Scores
On completing a BELIT test, the user will be scored on their level of proficiency from 1 to 10 – 10 being the highest.
In the standards of GlobalEnglish, the ratings are as follows:
LEVELS 1 and 2 – Beginners
LEVELS 3 to 7 – Intermediate learner
LEVELS 8 to 10 – Advanced learners

Steps to ensure effective communication in the business

  • Establish the scope of your organisation's Business English communication challenges.
  • Determine company standards for English competence and allocate training resources accordingly.
  • Identify those with the greatest need for improved English communication skills and determine who will benefit most from training.
Improve employee performance by implementing an objective assessment that can serve as the basis for individual development goals.

Requirements
The test is largely online and there are few requirements that are necessary to do the test successfully.

  • Internet access: The test requires login information which is specific to every user. This information is provided by the GlobalEnglish team once a test has been assigned to the user.
  • Time set aside: The test needs to be completed in one sitting. This means that a user assigned to the test will need to keep aside 30 or 50 mins to do the test without being interrupted. Once logged out, the test cannot be reset or redone.
  • Tools required: The user will need access to a computer/laptop with internet access and audio enabled. They will also require a headset to participate in listening activities without any external disturbances.

Benefits

  • The outcomes of the test will help identify the learning stage and gaps, and will help companies plan their training around these outcomes.
  • The test will identify those with the greatest need for improved English communication skills and determine who will benefit most from ongoing training.
  • The test has an interactive design providing learners with an engaging testing experience.
  • Test scores correlate to the instructional levels in the GlobalEnglish Edge™ that have international accreditation such as TOEFL and IELTS.
  • The levels are also measured against a competency framework that can determine what each individual is cable of doing at each level.

Use in Recruitment

Several surveys have indicated major losses in business due to bad communication and or significant email errors. As a result, apart from regular testing, many smart companies also use the BELIT test in their recruitment processes.

Candidates follow a screening process, which includes taking a BELIT test to eliminate the possibility of communication challenges in the job. The test scores will also determine if the individual is capable of carrying out the role they are being shortlisted for from a business communication perspective. (see competency framework).
