Research has shown that clear direction and focus are critical to the success of a corporate university. Moreover, institutions that have “vaguely defined missions and overly broad charters are rarely successful.” (1) Thus, the best way to ensure success and avoid pitfalls is to establish a well-balanced governance board.

This philosophy has been adhered to by those charged with the responsibility of establishing the GAC Corporate Academy (GCA). A GCA Governance Board has been created to validate the Academy’s vision, mission, values, strategic objectives, programmes, courses and allocation of resources.

Board numbers have been deliberately kept to a minimum to avoid the hazards associated with a bureaucracy. Its members have high-level corporate experience, which is essential in providing sound strategic guidance. In addition, the board includes members from outside the GAC Group to provide both specialist expertise and an objective perspective.
